5 - Balavagga, The Fool
14 - Vanavasitissasamanera Vatthu
Anna hi labhupanisa, anna nibbanagamini;
evametam abhinnaya, bhikkhu Buddhassa savako;
sakkaram nabhinandeyya, vivekamanubruhaye.
75: Indeed, the path that leads to worldly gain is one and the Path that leads to Nibbana is another. Fully comprehending this, the bhikkhu, the disciple of the Buddha, should not take delight in worldly gain and honour, but devote himself to solitude, detachment and the realization of Nibbana.

Asantam bhavanamiccheyya,
purekkharanca bhikkhusu;

avasesu ca issariyam,
pujam parakulesu ca.
Mameva kata mannantu,
gihi pabbajita ubho;
mamevativasa assu,
kiccakiccesu kismici;
iti balassa sankappo,
iccha mano ca vaddhati.
73: The foolish bhikkhu desires praise for qualities he does not have, precedence among bhikkhus, authority in the monasteries, and veneration from those unrelated to him.
74: "Let both laymen and bhikkhus think that things are done because of me; let them obey me in all matters, great and small." Such being the thoughts of the fool, his greed and his pride grow.

The Buddha spoke only good speeches
The Buddha is honoured with the Virtue of “Sugato” because he spoke only the true and beneficial speeches.
In the matter of futility he had forsaken the four ways of speeches:
1. The speech that is not true, not beneficial and unpleasant to the hearer such as wrong accusatation, use of abusive language etc.
2.
The speech that is true but not beneficial and unpleasant to the hearer such as calling the blind man as blind; calling the deaf man as deaf; calling the leper as leper and so on.
3. The speech that is not true and not beneficial but pleasant to the listener such as flattery.
4. The speech that is true and not beneficial but pleasant to the listener such as calling good killer, good thief, good drinker etc.
In the matter of truth he spoke only two ways of speeches:
1. The speech that is true and beneficial but unpleasant to the listener such as saying evil deed leads to Apaya; will be long in misery in Samsara; no remedy for Devadatta; he will go to hell etc.
2. The speech that is true, beneficial and pleasant to the listener such as saying charity brings happiness; morality brings longevity and absence of diseases etc.

Digha jagarato ratti, digham santassa yojanam;
digho balana samsaro, saddhammam avijanatam.
60: Long is the night to one who is wakeful; long is (the journey of) one yojana to the traveller who is tired; long is samsara (round of rebirths) to the fool, who is ignorant of the true Dhamma (the Teaching of the Buddha).

Evam sankarabhutesu,

58 - 59: As a sweet-smelling and beautiful lotus flower may grow upon a heap of rubbish thrown on the highway, so also, out of the rubbish heap of beings may appear a disciple of the Buddha, who with his wisdom shines forth far above the blind (ignorant) worldlings.

Na pupphagandho pativatameti,
na candanam tagara mallika va;
satanca gandho pativatameti,
sabba disa sappuriso pavayati.
Cadanam tagaram vapi,
uppalam atha vassiki;
etesam gandhajatanam,
silagandho anuttaro.
54: The scent of flowers cannot go against the wind; nor the scent of sandalwood, nor of rhododendron (tagara), nor of jasmin (mallika)2; only the reputation of good people can go against the wind. The reputation of the virtuous ones (sappurisa) is wafted abroad in all directions.
55: There are the scents of sandalwood, rhododendron, lotus and jasmin (vassika)3; but the scent of virtue surpasses all scents.

51: Just as a beautiful flower, lacking in scent, cannot give
the wearer the benefit of its scent, so also, the well-preach-
ed words of the Buddha cannot benefit one who does not
practise the Dhamma.
52: Just as a flower, beautiful as well as fragrant, will give
the wearer the benefit of its scent, so also, the well-preach-
ed words of the Buddha will benefit one who practises the
Dhamma.

49: As the bee collects nectar and flies away without damaging the flower or its colour or its scent, so also, let the bhikkhu dwell and act in the village (without affecting the faith and generosity or the wealth of the villagers).

who encourages you to do good things;
who never abandons you when you are in trouble;
who asks you to refrain from doing bad things;
who does not gossip about you;
who appreciates your good qualities and achievements;
who acknowledges his own weak points and
who is not boastful.

Two Extremities and the Right Middle Way 

Enjoying kama sensual pleasures must be abandoned and avoided.
Refraining from eating, self-motification must also be avoided.
The middle way the right path must be practised certainly.
Kamasukhallika nuyoga is lobha extremity.
Dying with greed, shall they reach to peta realm.
Attakilamatha nuyoga is the dosa extremity.
Dying with dosa, shall they reach to the realm of niraya.
Alobha is the true cause of avoiding the kama sensual pleasures.
Adosa is the true cause of refraining from attakilamatha.
Amoha is the true cause of practising the middle way.
Avoiding the two wrong extremes, the right one is the middle way.
On treading the right way, penetrative wisdom develops, then nibbana is attained.
