Ovāda Pāṭimokkha Gatha (The Buddhas' Teaching)

Every Buddha's Teaching deals with the duties of the disciples who have ordained in line with the Buddha's instructions. However, these practices also apply to the lay people as well. Everyone can take these practices and train themselves to become good.

On one occasion, Venerable Ananda asked the Buddha whether the Fundamental rules to disciples given by the early Buddhas were the same as those of the Blessed One himself. Then the Buddha said to him that the rules preached by all the Buddhas were the same as shown in the following verses (gatha):
Khantī paramaṃ tapo tītikkhā
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ vadanti buddhā,
Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī
Na samaṇo hoti paraṃ viheṭhayanto.
Forbearance is the best austerity,
"Nibbana is Supreme", said the Buddhas.
He is not one gone forth who harms another.
He is not a recluse who molests others.

Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṃ,
Kusalassa upasampadā,
Sacittapariyodapanaṃ:
Etaṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ.
The non-doing of any evil,
The performance of what is meritorious,
To purify one's own mind:
This is the the Buddhas' teaching.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto
Pāṭimokkhe ca saṃvaro
Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṃ
Pantañca sayan'āsanaṃ.
Adhicitte ca āyogo:
Etaṃ buddhāna sāsananti.
Not insulting, Not harming,
Restraint in line with the monastic rules (Patimokkha)
Moderation in food,
Dwelling in a secluded place,
Devotion to mindful intent by means of meditation:
This is the Buddhas' teaching.

Ovada Patimokkha_Frequency

In Theravada Buddhism, the Patimokkha is the basic code of monastic discipline. The word Pali “Patimokkha” means keeping away from the suffering of Apaya. The Patimokkha consists of two parts: “Ovada Patimokkha” and “Powered Patimokkha”. Both parts can forbid the access to apaya. Ovada Patimokkha can also be called a summary of Tipitaka. Powered Patimokkha is the Vinaya Pitaka.

The Buddhas with long life span gave this desana of “Ovada Patimokkha” to the Sanghas till death. With short life span the Buddhas admonished only Ovada Patimokkha within first 20 vassas, i.e. also known as the first Bhodhi. In the second Bhodhi, the Buddha gave the order by “Powered Patimokkha”. The examples of teaching of the preceding Buddhas are as follow:

Buddha Vipassi gave this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once for seven years.
Buddha Sikhi showed this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once for six years.
Buddha Vessabhu taught this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once for six years.
Buddha Kakusandha preached this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once a year.
Buddha Konagamana admonished this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once a year.
Buddha Kassapa expressed this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once for six months.
Buddha Gotama who had a short life span expounded this “Ovada Patimokkha” desana once for fifteen days, i.e. the full-moon day and the new moon day during first 20 vassas (the first Bhodhi). In the period of the second Bhodhi, his disciples were learned by the only “Powered Patimokkha” desana once for half a month.
